Just as the HEMI engine sets the benchmark for V8 power, so the CRD (Common Rail Direct) diesel engine showcases the very latest technology in diesel power and performance - adding another dimension to buyer choice with the Grand Cherokee CRD Limited priced at the same attractive value as the 5.7-litre HEMI-powered model at $78,900.
Outwardly, the petrol and diesel Grand Cherokees look exactly the same because they are all lavishly equipped Limited models. However, in place of the previous Grand Cherokee’s 5-cylinder, 2.7-litre diesel engine is an all-new, ‘next generation’ common-rail 3-litre, V6 power unit delivering class-leading levels of torque and towing, with impressive fuel economy.
With Bosch high-pressure fuel injection (up to 1600 bar), a variable geometry turbocharger and four-valves-per-cylinder, the new engine is bristling with performance technology and meets Euro 4 emission standards. Maximum power is 160 kW (218 hp DIN) and peak torque of 510 Nm is available from just 1600 rpm.
That’s a 33% increase in power and 28% increase in torque over the previous engine and, interestingly, more torque than the V8 HEMI. In fact, it has one of the highest torque figures for any four-wheel-drive vehicle in New Zealand and its 3500kg braked tow rating is amongst the best.
It is an exceptionally smooth running engine due to enhancements such as low-friction valve gear, larger bearings for the crankshaft, connecting rods made from a new alloy and a counter-rotating balancer shaft between the cylinder banks. A quick-start glow system shortens preheating time to just a moment, so that the diesel is nearly as quick to start as a petrol engine.
Unlike many other diesel engines, the 3-litre CRD features an aluminum crankcase with cast-in grey iron cylinder liners, which make a major contribution to weight reduction. As a result, the new V6 weighs a total of only 215 kg.
Reduced weight and the superb efficiency of the CRD engine translates into fantastic fuel economy, which will appeal to buyers who want a very capable four-wheel-drive vehicle with plenty or room and comfort but the thirst of a small family car. The Jeep Grand Cherokee CRD is not lacking in performance either, with a 0-100km/h acceleration of 9 seconds and top speed of 200km/h.
The five-speed W5A580 automatic transmission has been especially designed for this engine to offer smooth shifts and optimum fuel economy.
It features Electronic Range Select driver interactive shift control, providing fully automatic shifting in the ‘Drive’ position, or the driver can manually select each gear sequentially by moving the shift lever left or right to go up or down in gear. This gives the driver control to precisely match any on-road or off-road driving requirement.
The CRD model has the new suspension system and variable rack and pinion steering as the petrol models, including the latest Electronic Stability Programme (ESP), which works with the anti-lock brakes (ABS) to help the driver retain control in cornering and emergency manoeuvres. ESP also incorporates a ‘roll-over mitigation system’.
For additional safety, the new Jeep Grand Cherokee has front and side curtain airbags and a tyre pressure monitoring system to alert the driver of a puncture or air leak. A strengthened bodyshell better withstands impacts, adding to the superb safety features of this vehicle.
As with all new Grand Cherokee models sold in New Zealand, the latest Quadra-Drive II four-wheel-drive system is standard. Described as one of the most advanced of its type it provides full-time four-wheel-drive to benefit the driver during marginal conditions on-road, as well as off-road.
The new system incorporates electronic limited slip differential technology in both axles and in the transfer case. These activate even faster to direct power to the wheel or wheels with the most traction. Plus, there’s 10% more wheel travel at the front and good ground clearance and entry/exit angles. In combination with the phenomenal engine braking ability of the CRD, this model displays excellent off-road ability.
The new Jeep Grand Cherokee is both longer and wider than before, providing significant improvements to interior passenger room and luggage space.
It is also more luxurious. The Limited model features elegant leather upholstery, dual zone climate air conditioning, premium 276Watt Boston Acoustics, 6 disc in dash CD and MP3 sound system, power windows and folding wing mirrors, remote central locking with engine immobiliser, power-adjustable and heated electric front seats, auto dimming rear view mirror, rear park assist sensors, rain-sensing auto wipers and a vehicle information centre that includes the tyre pressure monitor.
The Jeep Grand Cherokee CRD Limited is currently being delivered to Chrysler Jeep showrooms around the country.
