Keep an Open Mind...

Keep an open mind...

It is a commonly used phrase that has almost become a little cliché: “you never stop learning while you are fishing”. Through out my time on the water, be it as a commercial fisherman, a game fisherman or just as a keen recreational angler I have always tried to tune in to the best way to catch a fish, and it seems that just when you think you’ve got it down a new method or product comes along and sparks a re-think.

Think back a couple of years; if some one went out fishing for snapper with no bait, instead fishing with rubber lures and a rod that looks no stronger than a sprat rod, they would be labelled a lunatic! But with today’s tackle and techniques it is not only an accepted practice but a very productive practice. I can well relate to the apprehension when changing from the tried and true, some methods just feel unnatural. Trolling lures for Marlin with no hooks in them, using circle hooks, using salmon for bait, and using rubber instead of bait all seemed fairly radical at the time but they are all now part of my regular fishing practice.

To help our viewers take the first step towards trying new techniques we have tried to incorporate them into the show as much as possible to give a head start on the learning curve. It is much easier to try something new when you’ve seen it work in living colour, and I’m sure that some of our up coming episodes will not only educate, but inspire fishers to get out there and give it a go.
